Working in Browse

Explore photographed places and days with Journey, the map beside Grid, Loupe and Compare.

Browse shows photographs from the selected collection, with search, filters, organisation and export controls.

Press B to open Browse. Choose phases do not affect it.

1. Select All Photographs, a source, an album or a folder in the sidebar. A source shows every photograph it holds; a folder includes its subfolders. Filter the sidebar by name to find a place.
2. Press ⌘F to search photographs or open the Explore drawer to select detected words, cameras and lenses.
3. Set the control band’s RAW only, Edited, Monochrome or minimum-rating filters.
4. Choose a sort order: oldest first (the default), newest first, highest rated or filename.
5. Select photographs with click, ⌘-click, a selection rectangle or ⇧-click for a range.
6. Press C to review in Choose, D to edit or E to export. Select two or more photographs and choose Photo › Present to show them full screen, as Presenting describes.

On iPhone and iPad. Browse keeps collections, search and filters beside the photographs in a layout for touch. Duo rearranges them when a folding iPhone changes posture. Opening a Duo over the grid keeps the closed screen’s arrangement against the right-hand edge until the hinge is well open, then spreads the photographs left across the new space as the hinge opens; closing gathers them back, and the movement follows the hinge both ways. Under the collection’s title in the bar, one row names the kind of place in amber (LIBRARY, ALBUM or FOLDER) and follows it with the days its photographs span, how many there are and how many are kept. Where the bar is too narrow for the whole row, the days are left out. While a filter narrows the place, or its photographs are still arriving, the row says how many are shown and names the filters instead. Under that, a short line shows the place’s judgement: kept in amber, rejected in red and the undecided rest in dim grey. Both are hidden at the accessibility text sizes, and VoiceOver reads the kind, the title and the same counts together. On a phone, a small amber icon leads the collection title and the numbers fill the line beneath, as in 12–19 MAR · 297 · 19 ▸. In the loupe, the mobile header shows the filename above its pick status, star rating, and capture date and time. Photo overlays are available in the view menu. In the grid, the chalk box round a judged photograph stands just outside the picture, and the mark for a developed photograph and its version count sits in the band above the picture’s edge. In the loupe, swipe sideways to page through the photographs, and pull the photograph down or up to return it to its place in the grid. On Apple TV, Browse opens a chosen Photos album and can use synced saved searches; it does not offer choosing or editing controls.

Edited matches photographs whose selected version differs from ORIGINAL. Monochrome matches the selected version’s process. Turning the rating filter off preserves its threshold and shows a dimmed preview. Browse filters persist when switching to Choose and back. Inspect’s threshold is separate.

Filters include only matching photographs, including within sets. A folded set selects its cover. Unfold it with ⇧K before selecting other members. Sweep’s handling of sets is described in Working in Choose.

Photograph details. Press I to open the info panel. With one photograph selected, RATING and VERDICT let you set stars, Keep, Reject or Clear. The panel also shows filename, capture and import dates, dimensions, megapixels, development and version status, and original location. CAPTION and KEYWORDS let you add text for search and export. These editing sections are hidden for multiple selections. With no selection, the panel shows a message. On iPhone and iPad, tap ⓘ in the loupe’s toolbar to show or hide the same details. On Duo, tap ✕ at the top of the details to close them.

Sets and pairs. RAW+JPEG pairs appear as one photograph in Photos and folder sources. Two RAW files with the same stem remain separate. Related photographs are grouped on a warm background with a set icon and count. Use ⌘K to create a set, ⇧K to fold it and ⌥K to choose its cover. Sets remain open until folded by hand; the state persists across sessions.

Save a search. Click Save above the grid to store the query and filters under a name in Library. Counts update as the catalogue changes.

Sidebar. Press ⌥⌘S to hide or show it. Sorting and hiding rows affect only Frames. Creating, renaming, moving or deleting Photos collections changes the Photos library and can sync through iCloud.

Histograms. Grid has no histogram. Loupe shows it after decoding the original. When only a proxy is available, the histogram says needs the original. In Compare, rest on the comparison, zoom, or use Load original to obtain the decode.

Export. The export sheet shows required downloads, estimated size and free destination space before you start.
