Chapter 01 · Starting out
1.1What Frames is
Frames is a RAW editor and catalogue for macOS, iOS and iPadOS, with Browse and Present on tvOS.
Across devices. The controls follow the screen while the photograph stays at the centre of the work.
| Device | What you can do |
|---|---|
| Mac · macOS | Browse, choose, develop and export from Photos or folders. |
| iPhone · iOS | Browse, choose, develop and export with touch controls. |
| Duo · folding iPhone | Use layouts for flat and propped postures. |
| iPad · iPadOS | Browse, choose, develop and export with room for collections, photograph and controls. |
| Apple TV · tvOS | Browse a chosen Photos album and present photographs on the television. |
Frames needs macOS 15.2 or later on a Mac, iOS 26.1 or later on iPhone and Duo, iPadOS 26.1 or later on iPad, and tvOS 27 or later on Apple TV.
Decision sync. Turn it on to carry ratings, keep and reject verdicts, keywords, captions, creator and copyright details, edits and versions, saved searches, looks, export presets, star meanings, composition intentions and marked observations, and the names of your sources between devices through your private iCloud account. It is off until enabled. Each device keeps its own local catalogue. Frames does not sync the catalogue file, originals or previews; iCloud Photos can carry photographs separately if you use it. See Decision sync.
Your files stay where they are. Frames stores ratings, keep and reject decisions, and edits in its own catalogue. Editing leaves original files unchanged.
Local processing. Photo processing and analysis run on your device. This includes RAW development, mask detection, scene search analysis and composition measurements. Frames does not upload photographs for processing or analysis.
This manual describes the current application. Frames opens still images only.
